Today’s Readings: “Be patient!” How many times have we heard
those words or spoken them to another? Sometimes we lose our patience at minor
irritations. We lose patience during those times when we are unable to exert
control over our lives and our future. Learning to wait in patience helps to
create the sense of steadfastness that we find in the Letter of James.
We can recount many examples of persecuted people being
supported by a steadfast faith. James calls attention to the prophets of the
Hebrew Scriptures who continued to speak out against injustice at the risk of
losing their lives. Throughout the centuries, history records the names of
women and men who have given their lives defending their faith, defending the
rights of others. And yet, if we stop to think about it, those people surround
us. They are listed in the family tree contained in our Bible. They came as
immigrants seeking a new life; they continue to come as undocumented people seeking
to survive. These are the people who nourish our weakness with their steadfast
patience and faith. Yes, the Lord is coming, but for those who wait in
steadfastness, the coming is already in process.
