You are my beloved Son.

Today’s Readings:  Today the Church celebrates the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord. It marks the official ending of the Christmas Season and the beginning of what the Church terms “Ordinary Time.” During Ordinary Time the gospel readings tell us of the public life and ministry of Jesus which began with his baptism. Theologically, Jesus’ baptism is so important that the story is told by all four evangelists. This event introduces Jesus as the New Covenant, and baptism eventually becomes part of the initiation rite of all Christians into that covenant.

In today’s society response to the baptismal commitment comes in many forms. Through faithful support of one’s spouse and responsible parenting one can live out baptismal promises within the family. Baptismal promises can become a reality in the workplace through ethically responsible business practices. Employers who offer fair wages and good working conditions and employees who take their jobs seriously can become witnesses to their baptismal covenant.

Response to the baptismal call is any public statement of word or action through which we make known our belief in and commitment to Christianity.

PROPAGATION OF THE FAITH COLLECTION MEMBERSHIP next weekend, January 19/20. Join with missionaries in bringing the Good News and love of Christ to all the world.

Thank You

The Ayers and Cochran families are so thankful for all the prayers said for Alison Thompson who was diagnosed with stage 4 melanoma about two months ago. The pathology reports following additional surgery were all negative for melanoma. Without all the prayers of St. Mary’s and about 16 other churches and prayer groups this wonderful result may not have occurred. Please keep her in your prayers as she must be checked every six months for the next two years before she can be considered cured.

OUR SYMPATHY to Dr. John Temponeras and family on the death of his sister, Lambrini’ Maniani’, who died last week in Greece. May our ever-loving God grant her eternal peace and comfort her family at this time of loss.

30 ways to live a holier life:..21st one.  Avoid gossip. Work hard to avoid gossip and or speculating about other people. Remember, there’s no way to know someone else’s heart - leave that to God.

From the Pastor’s Desk

Endowment update So far, I’ve gotten commitments from two others of $1,000 each. To get this started, you don’t have to be a “big” donor, just whatever you can to help St. Mary be viable in the future. Just let Fr. Ted know what you would like to do to help us get started. Our goal is $10,000 to begin. Here’s what the other area churches have with the Catholic Foundation:

St. Peter                             $ 51,770          Our Lady of Sorrows   $240,621

Holy Trinity                       $331,730         Our Lady of Lourdes     $94,273

      Holy Redeemer                  $ 23,880

All the funds at these churches were designated for the needs of the parish…except for St. Peter’s which “is used for the maintenance and operation needs of St. Peter Cemetery.” The website for the Foundation is www.catholic-foundation.org.

A SPECIAL THANK YOU to Jerry Martin, Sue Welty and Mary Martha Questel for conducting the tours of St. Mary Church during the “Tour of Churches” and to Jim Hufferd and Jerry Martin for being our radio MC’s during midnight Mass which was heard on WPAY.
