Today’s Readings  Today’s readings continue the theme of call/response that we saw last week in the Baptism of the Lord narrative. Today we focus on the element of empowerment through the Spirit and confirmation of the call to ministry.

Confirmation by the Spirit of the call/response is also related in the account of Jesus’ baptism found today in John’s Gospel. Last week’s baptism narrative, from Matthew’s Gospel, gave us the account from the vantage point of Jesus. This week, John the Evangelist describes the event through the eyes of John the Baptist. While Jesus’ baptism in the Jordan was a very intense personal experience for him, the Baptizer observes a public confirmation of the Spirit to Jesus’ response to the call to ministry.

Few of us experience the descent of the Holy Spirit in the form of a dove as confirmation of God’s call or our response. How, then, can we know that God truly has confirmed a response to a perceived call? Through “call” can be an intensely personal experience, it is often accompanied by a sense of empowerment that prompts a public manifestation or response to that call. There is inner assurance that we no longer represent only our own interests, but now must speak and act as the children of God

Gracious God, you create us and love us and make

us to live together in community. We thank you for Martin Luther

King, Jr. and all your children who have been filled with your vision

and who have worked to bring your vision into reality. Guide us to live

by your vision, working to build the community where everyone

is welcomed, all are valued, power is shared, and all your children

know wholeness and well-being. Through Jesus Christ we pray. Amen.
