THE LORD IS MY LIGHT AND MY SALVATION

Today’s Readings  Matthew’s Gospel on this day recounts the beginning of Jesus’ public ministry and the call of the first disciples. Seeing John the Baptist’s arrest as a sign to begin his public ministry, Jesus withdrew to Capernaum, a city in his homeland of Galilee. Since Galilee was part of the land previously called Zebulun and Naphtali, Matthew considers Jesus’ ministry as a fulfillment of the first reading from Isaiah: The people of Zebulun and Naphtali will see a great light which will rise above the land overshadowed by death.

      It is not always easy to be a faithful witness to the gospel message, as Paul hints at in his Letter to the Corinthians. Sometimes factions develop within families or within the Church that make the living out of gospel values difficult. Paul tells us that when tensions arise, our rootedness in Christ raises us above petty arguments. We are called to continually reform our lives so that we may reflect the light of Christ.

Our Philippine parishioners hold a special place in their hearts for the Infant Jesus and January 27 is the date

of this special celebration. Let us pray with them the following devotion.

                  O Dear sweet Infant Jesus, I offer

 You my will, that You strengthen it, my mind

       that You  inspire it; my memory that You fill it;

 my wishes and desires, that You cleanse them. I sacrifice to You; my intentions that You guide them,

all my inner and outer activities, that You

      make them sacred. All I am and all I have is

      Yours. Your love for me is my hope and trust.

      Hear me and grant that I may never leave you.

                                                Amen
