Today’s Readings: The modern Christian does not have to look far in order to discover the use of violence. Not infrequently, we employ subtle forms of violence. When we are hurt by friends and family members, we resort to violence when we refuse to speak. Our silence thus becomes our principle way of crippling the enemy.

In our working world, we can be the innocent victims of harassment and exploitation. Instinctively, we look for the opportunity to retaliate against the perpetrators. Slander and deceit may become our lethal weapons as we take the offensive.

On the world scene, we witness an alarming escalation of violence. We seem to take it for granted that only violence can overcome violence. Bigger and better arms and better planned strategy appear to be the only reasonable response.

Jesus urges us to review our violent ways. Today’s gospel implies an attitude of patient endurance, even death if necessary. Jesus’ message is to arm yourself with compassion, not violence. And he practiced his message to the ultimate.

GOOD FRIDAY COLLECTION  Few places in the world are as precious to Catholics as those where Jesus Christ walked, taught, lived and died. Your generosity on Good Friday can keep alive those Holy Places and the Franciscan Missioners who serve the people there.

RICE BOWLS  The Sacramentary notes that on Holy Thursday “there may be a procession of the faithful with gifts for the poor”. This is the proper time for the Rice Bowl envelopes to be returned and there will be containers for depositing them before Mass to be carried in the offertory procession.

NOTE:

THERE WILL BE NO VESPERS THIS SUNDAY EVENING, PALM SUNDAY.

HOLY WEEK SIGN UP SHEETS are now in the sacristy. We need a lot of volunteers.

Our Sympathy to Bob & Ruth Marasek on the death of Ruth’s Mother, Mary Oakes. May our ever-loving God grant Mary eternal peace and comfort her family at this time of loss.

Thank You

The family of Renato Pasquinelli would like to express their gratitude to Fr. Ted and the area priests and Barb Glockner, Noreen and the wonderful choir for the beautiful funeral Mass. We’d also like to thank Gloria Horsley and her great crew for the delicious mercy meal. The prayers and sympathy during Pop’s illness and death were greatly appreciated!

St. Mary’s Catholic Church,

A very special “Thank You” for the beautiful basket you sent me while I was in the hospital. Also “thank you” for all of the love, prayers, cards, good wishes and candles. I’m home now after 26 days in the hospital – doing better than expected, thanks to your prayers.

From the Pastor’s Desk

The sky is falling down  Not really, but there was a leak from Fr. Ted’s bathtub that needed repair. Now there is a hole in the ceiling from fixing the pipe. Is there anyone who would be able to put in an access panel so that if the problem arises again, we wouldn’t have to cut the ceiling? Call the office, 354-4551 or Fr. Ted at 353-3858.

Remember your family in your will and also your parish family. Two ways to do that: as a contribution to the general operating fund or to the endowment – a lasting memorial that will grow each year.
