The Lord is my shepherd, there is nothing I shall want.

Today’s Readings:  Some of us are leaders, and others are followers. In some cases, it seems that the followers are expected to put the needs of the leader first. This attitude can even extend to the point where some people think others exist merely for their own pleasure. The pursuit of self can lead to that impasse where we wholeheartedly support the concept: shepherds first, sheep last.

Today’s readings focus on the relationship between shepherd and sheep. They are a radical departure from our myopic world of ends and means. Here the emphasis is on the end – the sheep and their welfare. The shepherd is thereby the means to ensure the well-being of the flock. In today’s famous psalm of confidence, the author speaks of Yahweh as his shepherd. The title connoted Yahweh’s loyalty to his sheep, the people of Israel.

Besides the image of the shepherd, there is also the image of the host. Both images are set against the background of the desert where the protector of the sheep is also the protector of the desert traveler, offering hospitality and safety from enemies. The rod is a defensive weapon against wild animals, while the staff is a supportive instrument. Both rod and staff, therefore, symbolize that the sheep do not experience fear. Here, it is sheep first, shepherds last.

CONGRATULATIONS TO THOSE FROM ST. MARY’S WHO WERE CONFIRMED LAST SUNDAY.
