Today’s Readings:
To pray is to see the world
in a new way. How often we look upon prayer as an exercise to be endured at all
costs. We are told to pray and so we go through the motions of trying to
communicate with the Omnipotent One. We bring our agenda to this deity
and program ourselves to survive the session. We assume that this Other
will get the message and make the proper response.
Today’s readings address the
vital issue of prayer. We are introduced to the prayer of the psalmist, the
early Church, and Jesus himself. Actually, we are admitted into a realm where
we are to put aside our total fascination with self and focus on Another.
To pray is to see the world in a new way.
The Jewish philosopher, Abraham Heschel, has written: “To pray is to bring God back into the world.” At prayer we are invited not to dismiss our problems and worries but to view them as related to Another. Like Luke’s Mary, we are urged to ponder our puzzles in the company of this God. Like the psalmist, we are challenged to reflect on our pain in the presence of this God. Like the Johannine Jesus, we are called to link our manner of ministry with the will of the Father of Jesus. Prayer is never a retreat to illusion. It is the realistic decision to see other realities at work in our personal life and the life of our community. Our biblical authors insist that to pray is to see the world in a new way.

MAY – THE
MONTH OF MARY
The one who accepted “Life” in the name of all and for the sake of all
was Mary, the Virgin Mother; she is thus most closely and personally associated
with the Gospel of Life. Mary’s consent at the Annunciation, and her motherhood
stand at the very beginning of the mystery of life which Christ came to bestow
on humanity.

Thank

From the Pastor’s Desk
Discipleship “Discipleship requires the surrender of ourselves through grace and choice to Jesus Christ: ‘Mature disciples make a conscious, firm decision, carried out in action, to be followers of Jesus Christ no matter the cost to themselves.’ A disciple is both a learner and a companion of Jesus Christ, as well as one open to the movement of the Holy Spirit towards a gracious generosity of heart. The authentic disciple regards all he or she is and possesses as gifts and blessings and realized the need to share those gifts and blessings with others for the sake of the kingdom of God.” (USCCB) We all know we are stewards and know what stewardship means. The word “stewardship” is over-used and has sometimes just become synonymous with money. It is more than that. It is a part of being a disciple of Jesus. Therefore, the committees of St. Mary’s and Fr. Ted agree that we need to be what we are called to be…Disciples. Our Baptism makes us disciples to go out (and out of our way) to be leaders in the community of our Church and world. Stewardship is a disciple’s response to who we are and what we believe. Be more than a steward – be a Disciple.
Parish council Pentecost is coming quickly and that’s the time for the Holy Spirit to choose our next leaders in the parish (pastoral) council! If you would like to be a part of this advisory group and learn about what the parish is and will be doing, call the office, 354-4551 and offer your name for a 3 year commitment to your parish.
