I will praise
you LORD for you have rescued me.
Today’s Readings: In our modern world we tend to
look to the “beautiful people” as our source of hope and inspiration. They are
the ones who have enjoyed one success after another. Today’s readings, however,
urge us to discover hope in the people who have reached success in the
aftermath of failure.
The apostles, so recently
fearful, are now openly preaching and teaching the people. In today’s reading
from the Acts of the Apostles, they have been brought before the Sanhedrin
because of their teaching (5:27). They boldly defend their right and their
responsibility to continue proclaiming the name of the Lord (5:29-32). Upon
their release, “they rejoiced that they had been considered worthy to suffer
dishonor for the sake of the name.”
We never like to see our
heroes fail, since their demise implies the erosion of our hopes. The psalmist,
Peter, and Jesus are not inhabitants of a fantasy land. They live in our “real”
world where disaster and failure are everyday realities. They offer us the
benefit of their experiences – even in the face of great failure there can be a
new and brighter tomorrow for those who believe.
COLLECTION FOR THE
CHURCH IN CENTRAL AND EASTERN EUROPE NEXT SUNDAY: The Church in this region continues to have great
needs for its essential pastoral work. Your donations invest in future
generations of Catholics: a gift of faith to the future.
SHAWNEE STATE
CHOIR WILL BE PRESENTING A SPECIAL PROGRAM HERE AT ST. MARY’S AT 3 PM,
APRIL 18. A free will offering will be taken up to donate to the
Perlman Center in memory of Elli Bennett, an eight year old child who could
not speak. At the age of 3 she was outfitted with a high-tech computerized
communication device that was not covered on her family’s health insurance
plan, but with assistance of the Perlman Center in Cincinnati her family
was able to uncover assistance dollars required to purchase the device for
her. Elli
passed away on Oct. 19, 2008. (Her father is a member of the choir and they are trying
to help with expenses.)

NOTE:
DON’T FORGET TO PICK UP YOUR “LITTLE WHITE BOOK” at
the side and back entrances.
Six minutes a day. That’s what you’re asked to give during these next 50 days of the Easter season.
The key is the right-hand page. Walk through Luke’s resurrection narrative and on into the first part of his Acts of the Apostles.
On the left-hand page there is much information about the Easter season, various traditions and customs, the lives of saints.
It can change your day…change your life!

Thank you for your generosity to St. Mary Parish.
Christians commonly say they want a relationship with Jesus, that they want to “get to know Jesus better.” You will never be able to do that by yourself. You must be deeply involved in the church, in Christian community, with strong relationships of love and accountability. Only if you are part of a community of believers seeking to resemble, serve, and love Jesus will you ever get to know him and grow into his likeness. Timothy Keller
