YOU are my inheritance, O
LORD!
Today’s Readings: The life cycle is often
referred to as a journey, and today’s readings emphasize this journey motif.
They each consider a call from God, and specific responses that are made to
that call. Such a call is issued at every crossroads we encounter; our response
determines the path our journey will follow.
Luke’s Gospel doesn’t belie
whether or not the three who heard the call while on Jesus’ road to Jerusalem
ultimately followed him. The point is that they were called. They had to weigh
the consequences of that call for themselves, and they had to come to a free
and conscious decision: to go the right way or the wrong way…to accept or to
reject…to listen or to ignore. What excuses do we make when we hear a call we
suspect might bring rejection in one form or another? Are we afraid to trust
that God will truly sustain us, no matter what?
The good news is that God doesn’t give up. If we make excuses for taking the wrong road…or put off making the journey at all…or simply ignore that call as if it was never issued – God gently calls again…and again…and again. But if we take too many wrong roads we may never find our way back to the right one – and if we put the journey off too long we may lose heart for it altogether – and if we keep ignoring the call we may lose our capacity for hearing it.
PETER’S PENCE COLLECTION this weekend. provides the Holy Father with the
assistance he needs to carry out his most important charitable works. The
proceeds benefit the most disadvantaged: victims of war, oppression, and
disasters.
THANK YOU
The Scioto Co. Vocations Committee would like to thank everyone in our deanery for their
out-pouring of love, prayers, and financial support for our most recent
endeavors of “The Year of the Priest Reception” and the sponsoring of 17 of our
youth to attend the C.Y.S.C. The reception was a beautiful and delicious
appreciation shown our deanery priests in their answering the CALL of
Jesus to “Come Follow Me.” Thanks to all who
donated either food or money for the reception and stoles for our priests. In
addition, with your help, we have DOUBLED the number of young people attending
the Catholic Youth Summer Camp this year. Our spaghetti dinner brought in
$1,351 and with other fundraising and donations you have graciously contributed
close to $6,000. Thank you for listening to the CALL to help us nurture and
foster Vocations to the priesthood and consecrated religious life in our
deanery through prayer and inviting families to her and respond to God’s call
to “Come Follow Me.” To quote Pope John Paul II “There is
an urgent need for a more widespread and deeply felt conviction that all
members of the church have the grace and responsibility to look after
Vocations.”

From the Pastor’s Desk
Cedar Point….What
a trip! I (we) had a great time, again. Thanks to all who participated – the
chaperones, the young people from the area, and all who prayed for good
weather. One thing we will do differently in the future is to have Mass each
day we are up in the North Coast. We have been having Mass the first evening
but will add Mass before we go to CP on Thursday and Friday morning before we
come back to Portsmouth. Everyone was well behaved (including the
chaperones)…even though some of the girls almost got removed from the park –
don’t stand up on the Snake River Canyon ride to avoid getting wet! It’s a
water ride (you’re supposed to get wet).
Lightning update three new cameras, new controller, new mixer, have been ordered and may
be installed this week (I pray!) The cameras “are newer, more enhanced” than
the ones we are replacing and are roughly the same cost as the originals. One
of the old cameras is currently being repaired by Sony and will be used as a
backup if lightning strikes twice in the same place. My twenty-one year old
stereo didn’t make it and is not fit to be fixed (I really liked that stereo).
Festival start
We have decided to have two Festival Pancake Breakfasts to help support
the entertainment and start-up for the festival. The first will be Sunday,
July 11th and the second on August 15th, the
Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Donation to the
festival will get you pancakes, sausage, quiche, and something to drink.
Festival tickets have been approved and ordered. Our grand prize this year is
$1,000. Second grand prize is a 42” HD TV. There will also be 5 - $100 prizes.
Should be a great year with so many great volunteers!

GARDEN UPDATE: If you haven’t done so………..you should stop by
and look at our garden. Right now it is at its peak and the hydrangeas are
gorgeous!! These are the ones that were transplanted several years ago from our
Easter flowers and they have bloomed in different shades of pinks, blues and lavenders.
Suggestion: It would be nice if someone would take pictures so that they can be
added to our web-site! Contact Tim Paul regarding this.
