He Who Does Justice  WILL LIVE  In the Presence Of The Lord.

Today’s Readings:  How often we tend to stereotype people. We assign them roles and lifestyles because “It’s always been done that way.” The husband has always been the breadwinner. The wife has always been the homemaker. We can become even more insistent on stereotypes when we assign people to duties and responsibilities in the Church. The man must be the leader. The woman must be the dutiful follower. We may even invoke the Bible to prove the validity of our views.

Sarah and Martha, the woman in the kitchen, are indeed a contrast to Mary, the female disciple. The different roles of these women in biblical literature should give us pause when we relegate only certain jobs to only certain people in the Christian community. The yahwist speaks of God’s power to overcome the sterility of old age. Luke speaks of Jesus power to transcend the role models of every age. Both imply that we must discard the narrow vision of stereotyped individuals and roles to focus on the larger needs of the community. What tasks need to be fulfilled to spread the Good News, and how can men and women of all ages best use their God-given talents to benefit the community? It means that we should entertain serious questions and suggestions for extending the “roles” of women.

VISITING MISSIONARY THIS WEEKEND.

We welcome Fr. Sebastian Pandarathilkudiyil V.C., a Vincentian Missionary Priest from India, to our parish this weekend to participate in our Annual Missionary Cooperation Plan. The Vincentian Missionaries, all natives of India, need our help to carry out their many missionary, educational and charitable activities in their missions, including financial support for the training of young men studying for priesthood.

If you do not have an opportunity to make an offering today or would like to make an additional offering, you may make your offering through the general parish collection next weekend in a specially marked envelope. Thank you very much for your prayers and generous financial support.

From the Pastor

Stained Glass:  For St. George and Christopher Columbus (most in need of repair and restoration), we needed a total of $35,200. We have, as of 7/12, $27,431.68. A difference of $7,768.32. Fr. Ted called to have us put on the schedule for this year. The difference will come from our “Maintenance” fund. I mentioned that we would like to have the same crew come down that we had in the spring. The windows may need to be shipped to Minnesota for re-leading.  If you would like to help with the cost, you still can contribute through the “Maintenance” envelope marked “Windows” in the collection.

Marriage at St. Mary’s:  Sacred places, sacred ceremony. Marriage is an important Sacrament in the Church. Its celebration is reverent, holy, solemn, and is in the presence of God. Some places require certain codes of dress for us, and we abide by their rules. (Cedar Point even reserves the right to refuse admittance to those with offensive t-shirts). As of now, if you want a ceremony in St. Mary’s Church, the bridal party will be dressed appropriately to the solemnity of the Sacrament. NO STRAPLESS DRESSES. The work around for this is to have a shawl to cover the exposed areas for the ceremony. If none is provided, we have the towels we use for Holy Thursday foot washing that will then be used. If this is what is important to you, then the marriage could take place at a park, by the river, on a barge, or in your backyard with a Justice of the Peace.
